Red Beetle - Matheteus theveneti

Red Beetle - Matheteus theveneti
Soquel, Santa Cruz County, California, USA
April 1, 2012
This was on the rail of my deck. I missed all the action, but something must have been up because one of its legs was laying a couple of inches away. The beetle seemed a bit sulky about it. In spite of everything quite a nice looking beetle. When I flipped it over I was surprised to see how little was there. Were it not still moving I would have thought maybe it had been eaten after all.

it does look a little like a firefly...but the antennae reminded me of a Water penny beetle. i guess all i know now is that it is false in some way! Thanks for the ID
