Gorgeous LadyBug - Harmonia axyridis

Gorgeous LadyBug - Harmonia axyridis
Webster, Harris County, Texas, USA
April 1, 2012
Size: 1/4"
I found this Gorgeous Ladybug among a group of Ladybugs that were in various states of growth. I had managed to capture some small red bugs with this specimen yet the Ladybug promptly ate it during transport. Can anyone tell me what species this Ladybug is? I was told you can tell by the number of spots or color, yet I find this very suspect. If I am wrong please let me know.

Thanks,

Leon

you're right about spots and color...
Many lady beetle species have multiple color forms, and Harmonia axyridis is possibly the most variable - red, yellow, or orange with 0-19 spots, or black with a red/yellow/orange spots! The shape of this species is most diagnostic for me: boxy and "square-shouldered."
