Viceroy - Limenitis archippus - male

Viceroy - Limenitis archippus - Male
The Woodlands, Montgomery County, Texas, USA
July 8, 2006
I studied the guide pages for help with ID, and really appreciated the section on how to differentiate between the Monarch and the Viceroy. Since our specimen does have the dark line across hindwing, I believe this is a Viceroy. There are none in the guide for Texas, so I'm posting this there. As always, confirmation or correction are very welcome.

Moved from Viceroy.

Oops, didn't mean to move it
to subspecies yet. These from near the Gulf Coast are very distinctive, and they don't belong with subspecies archippus. I will be checking into it more.

Yes!
100% Viceroy! They lack the yellow spots the Monarchs have. Plus they're much smaller.

Viceroy
I agree with your diagnosis, Viceroy.

Thanks to both of you
This is our first Viceroy to photo and ID, so we appreciate the input.
