Roseate Skimmer - Orthemis ferruginea - Female
Leakey, Texas, Real County, Texas, USA
July 9, 2006
Taken near the headwaters of the Frio River.

Location information
Leakey is the county seat of Real County; it's not in Uvalde County. Garner State Park, often associated with Leakey, is at the north end of Uvalde County, however...so it's easy to assume that both Leakey and Garner State Park must be in the same county. Actually, the county line between Real and Uvalde counties runs between Leakey and Garner. Headwaters of the Frio are in Real County. Some of the headwaters of the Nueces are also in Real County (the Nueces forms its western boundary--Edwards is across the river.)

It happens to be one of my favorite parts of Texas...and I envy anyone who gets to spend summer days along the Frio, surely one of the pleasantest ways to keep cool is exploring around those chilly springs and rock-bottomed creeks and rivers.

But just had to correct the location. Depending on where you're exploring on the Frio, the county designation will change. (And the Frio changes character from, say, the steep canyons of the HEB camps and Laity Lodge to the flat wide valley east of ConCan near Big Tree Ranch.) Check the county line designations on road maps (or, on the county-maintained roads, you can usually tell by a change in pavement type and width when you pass from one county to another...and usually there's a small sign saying something like "entering [whatsit] county")

There used to be a lovely little road heading out northwest of Leakey, by the way--Prade Ranch Road--taking off to the right north of town where US83 makes a curve back toward the Frio. Haven't been on it in years, but it crossed over some watershed ridges between drainages and dipped into lovely little hollows and canyons each with a rock-bottomed creek. Good dragonfly country, if I'd known back then what to look for. (What we found on one such outing was the biggest centipede I've ever seen.)

Actually...
Elizabeth,

I did realize I was in Real County but my computer defaults to Uvalde Co. (where I live) when I fill in any web site forms (my bad for not seeing it). It's funny that you mention that FM road cause that's where I was at. You're right, it's gorgeous out there! I didn't see as many Odes as I had hoped but I was also babysitting my 3 year old daughter which made it difficult to shoot the one's I did see. Mostly, we just played in the water. Thanks for the response.
