Picture-Winged Conophorus - Conophorus fenestratus - female

Picture-Winged Conophorus - Conophorus fenestratus - Female
Pine Tree Canyon, Kern County, California, USA
March 29, 2012
I think this is probably Conophorus fenestratus...but I don't have a copy of the treatment by Priddy mentioned on the info page. Hoping someone (Hartmut, Andy,...?) might be able to confirm or correct my hypothesis.

Found on flowers of one of a clump of (very insect popular) desert alyssum (Lepidium fremontii) at the western edge of the Mojave Desert.

Moved
Moved from Conophorus.

I now have a copy of Priddy (1958) , and this indeed goes to C. fenestratus in his key. It also agrees well with his description thereof. There are only two nearctic species of Conophorus with patterned wings (see quote here), C. fenestratus and C. collini, and the latter has a medial longitudinal "groove" (sulcus) with yellowish tomentum...which is lacking here.

The specimen here has lighter, narrower wing markings than those of other current BugGuide posts, but Priddy mentions that markings are sometimes lighter. Compare with type images here. (Note the type image shows a male which has fine serrations along the costa of the wing. These are lacking in females like mine here.)
