Due to this tick's small size I have to ask. Can immature ticks become engorged like this or is this a particular species?

yes, nymphs can become engorged like this. Engorged individuals can be difficult to ID because some features (such as festoons and anal grooves) become difficult to see.

This specimen has long mouthparts, so thinking Ixodes or Amblyomma.
