So sad. I think these are parasites? If you look closely, there are quite a few of them dragging behind.

Yes
They are parasites. Do you have close ups? Are you trying to rear them? I have gotten a number of life cycles this way. Usually the caterpillar doesn't eat any longer. The parasites grow, pupate and eclose without needing much care. If they are small enough I keep them under a UV filter as a cage and I can take pictures and videos of the whole thing. It can be fascinating.
