Fly - Chyromya femorella

Fly - Chyromya femorella
Sand Springs, Osage County, Oklahoma, USA
April 15, 2012
Size: 3mm (1/8")
There were 8-10 of these little yellow flies on and off of a leaf of a butterfly bush that had a bird dropping on it. The wind was blowing and I couldn't get a good picture so I carefully removed the leaf from the plant hoping the flies would follow. None did except this little guy rode the leaf down until I put it on the ground. I will say that they were very interested in the bird dropping. What is it about the dropping that they found so irresistible?

Bird droppings are tasty, nutritious treats to some insects. The moth Macrocilix maia mimics two flies feeding on a bird dropping.
