Four-spotted Owlfly - Ululodes quadripunctatus - Guess Road at Lowell, Durham County, North Carolina, USA June 13, 2004
Found at a light. Posed. This is a male, based on the lack of spots on wings, hindwings excised at base, and slender abdomen. (Thanks to Eric Eaton for telling me about sexual dimorphism in this species.) Looks to me like there is a tuft of hair (scent scales, as in some butterflies?) on the dorsal side of the male abdomen as well. This bears investigation.
Another photo of this invididual--showing excised hindwings, is in linked images.
