Four-spotted Owlfly - Ululodes quadripunctatus - male

Four-spotted Owlfly - Ululodes quadripunctatus - Male
Guess Road at Lowell, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
June 12, 2004
Shows excised hindwings, characteristic of male. Male also (apparently) does not have strong dark wingspots. Note, too, what appears to be a tuft of hair (scent scales, as in some butterflies?) projecting on the dorsal side of the abdomen. I do not see this in females.

#6310 Identification -- Ululodes quadripunctatus (male)
This is the owlfly Ululodes quadripunctatus (Burmeister, 1839). The name "Ululodes quadrimaculatus", while a synonym of U. quadripunctatus, is incorrect under the rules of nomeclature.
