The only canthon like genus in northern California is boreocanthon, but I have never seen it before. was it found in cow dung?

Can't remember for sure
if I found it by flipping over a cow patty, or what.

Canthon simplex
According to the latest list - theres only the one sp. in California.

Boreocanthon is now treated as a subgenus of Canthon. They are smaller (less than or equal to 10mm) and have the clypeus with four large teeth (quadridentate) - I can't really see that in this photo. We have a couple spp. of this group in the east as well - none in guide though. Many of the old genera in this group have been downgraded, including Glaphyrocanthon. Melanocanthon is still a genus, and for good reason.

Phillip
thanks for the info and the page set up.

Thank you, Phil.
Nice to see an image of this species. I remember the first time I found a pair in Oregon. Totally surprised we had "tumblebugs" there:-)
