Spider Wasp - Episyron quinquenotatus - female

Spider Wasp - Episyron quinquenotatus - Female
Essex, Ontario, Canada
July 10, 2006
Size: 12 mm
The smaller wasp sneaks up to the entrance of the hole and a fight ensues with wings buzzing and feet stomping – every time. Then the smaller wasp leaves and is not seen again. The Spider wasp covers up the hole which takes about 8 minutes. Is the smaller wasp a parasitic? It doesn’t ever get into the hole. Does it lay an egg at the entrance, so the spider wasp will put it into the nest as she fills in the hole?
