Bee mimic Fly - Criorhina bubulcus

Bee mimic Fly - Criorhina bubulcus
Sitka County, Alaska, USA
April 18, 2012
Hopefully I'm not completely off on this - at the time I thought it was a bumblebee, but I couldn't figure out why it was hovering in place for a couple of seconds, then moving to another place and hovering there. It repeated this several times as I watched, landing a couple of times on flowers and a couple of times on pieces of wood. It didn't remember noticing behavior like this before, so I was puzzled. Looking at the pictures later I realized it was a fly, and I'm pretty sure it's a bee mimic robber fly. Looking through the guide it seems like L. fernaldi is the best fit.
