Ants - Lasius - female

Ants - Lasius - Female
Oak Ridge, Guilford County, North Carolina, USA
April 20, 2012
Size: ~4mm
These ants were found a few inches from the ground, under the bark of a small dead pine (killed with herbicide by the telephone company) about 2 inches in diameter.
It seemed that one side of the tree was occupied by these ants, and the other side by termites.
There were also earwigs and a crab spider there. Apparently the termites were protected from the ants by the earthen construction of their tunnels. When I broke them open, the ants attacked and killed the termites.
