Mite

Mite
Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada
April 22, 2012
Size: .5 - .6 mm
Here is the story (these are from a sequence of 35 photos):

The subject was on a dandelion type weed under several layers of foliage that hugged the ground. I had carefully peeled back the layers to see what I could find. There was ample moisture/water trapped between the layers so this impeded the movement of the subject.

As I tracked the subject, it picked up the white object and seemed to place it under itself before proceeding along somehow moving across it and then having the object drag behind it. The subject came up to a small blade of grass where it could not seem to go forward or climb over it. I moved the grass aside but the mite turned around in the opposite direction where it came across another mite, walked over it and ambled on with the second one in slow pursuit.

I have no idea what any of this was about but I did not imagine that mites would pick things up. I am also curious about the cadillac fins on the back of this species. The subject is extremely small and I could not see it without the camera. It was just one of those lucky days where I pointed the camera at the ground and something was there.

Just very wet ?
It has crossed my mind that this is just one very wet specimen with water weighing down setae at the back to make it look like horns or fins.
