Male Velvet Ant? -
Dasymutilla occidentalis
-
Baton Rouge, Hilltop Arboretum, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
July 8, 2006
Size: body length 22.0 mm.
This appears to be a male Velvet Ant. It is similiar to others on BugGuide but we could not find a match for the color pattern.

Male velvet ant?
I found the same kind with identical color patterns in my pool. I also found a female in the pool as well.

Although color pattern differs slightly from that of the female, this is actually the male of the large, bright red and black, eastern species. Very nice shots of an especially fresh individual. Later, the red fur fades to a duller rusty brown.
