Phanias watonus - male

Phanias watonus - Male
China Camp State Park, Marin County, California, USA
April 14, 2012
Collected by beating a California Buckeye tree (Aesculus californica). There seems to be some confusion about whether Phanias concoloratus is a senior synonym of Phanias watonus or not. I've looked at the original descriptions and this specimen definitely matches Phanias watonus. Unfortunately, the description for Phanias concoloratus is too vague to determine if it is the same species or not. This will likely remain unresolved until someone revises the genus and examines the type specimens. As of right now, however, they are still "officially" separate species (no one has formally declared a synonymy), so I'm going to list this as Phanias watonus.

Thanks! This guy was hard to photograph as he was a fast runner which seems rather rare among jumping spiders. Also this was my first pedipalp photograph with glass beads instead of sand. I have to say I'm happy with the results.

The glass beads give you a bit more light -- esp. helpful with some of these dark, small male Salticidae pedipalpae.
