Dasymutilla - female

Dasymutilla - Female
Carrizozo Malpais, Lincoln County, New Mexico, USA
July 5, 2006
There were lots of these guys on compacted clayey soil on the edge of the lava flows. Females were easy to photograph while checking sites for burrow potential, didn't get a decent picture of a male.

Temporary page. Kevin notes on iNaturalist that the two names should be synonymized in an upcoming paper.

D. vestita or D. homole
This is either Dasymutilla vestita or homole, they are separated by the color of the setae on the tip of the abdomen. They are nearly identical and are probably the same species. D. vestita is the older name.
