There were lots of these guys on compacted clayey soil on the edge of the lava flows. Females were easy to photograph while checking sites for burrow potential, didn't get a decent picture of a male.

this looks like dasymutilla c
this looks like dasymutilla chiron, there were lots of these in Utah.

 
D. creusa
This is D. creusa, because it lacks silvery setae on the apex of the abdomen. These species are nearly identical and probably only represent one species.
