"Crepe Myrtle Bark Scale" - Acanthococcus lagerstroemiae
Desoto, Dallas County, Texas, USA
April 20, 2012
Dr. Michael E. Merchant of Texas Agrilife Extension Service in Dallas says that these are definitely what he calls "Crepe Myrtle Bark Scale." Discovered several years ago in the Dallas area, he says they "have not been able to confirm ID yet, however, [he] is convinced that they are an exotic species that feeds on crepe myrtles and which have been introduced by someone into the Dallas area."

Udate: Dr. Merchant says that at this point, this should be put with Eriococcus and that "we do not have a definitive, specific name for these scale based on molecular analysis."

Spelling
I asked Dr. Merchant what the correct spelling of "Crepe/Crape" was. He said there were two camps and there were some in each that felt so passionately about the subject that they will hardly speak to each other! :)
