Inky Bee-fly - Anthrax aterrimus

Inky Bee-fly - Anthrax aterrimus
Snowhill Road north of Cabin Branch Creek, Treyburn area, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
July 12, 2006
Size: 13 mm
Captured while it was hovering in front of a wall, at the same location and showing similar behavior to what looks to be the same species from two years ago:

Captured, chilled, posed, and measured. Body length was 13 mm, wingspan 34 mm. It was a very strong, adept flier--it hovered quite well in the plastic container in which I snagged it.

Thanks for the ID--see comments.

Anthrax aterrimus
This specimen and the one in the linked photo appear to be Anthrax aterrimus. This species and the Florida population of A. georgicus are the only eastern Anthrax with entirely black wings. They can be separated with a clear view of the side of the thorax, but I think the range is sufficient for these photos.
