Rusty Willow Sawfly
Found one of these "Rusty Willow Sawfly" floating upside down in a lake near the Olympia airport while fly fishing in Washington State last Wednesday. I froze the subject and passed it on to one of my fellow fly fishing buddies whose daughter is an entomologist. This was the first time I have ever seen this insect. It was very large and resembled a very large hornet on steroids. Upon closer inspection, there was no stinger but the rust or burnt orange colored fly had large mandibles. I took a picture of the sawfly with my cell phone camera and will try to download the pictures.
