Big beetle: Tricochnemis, formerly Ergates? - Derobrachus thomasi
Yamato Scrub, Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Florida, USA
May 10, 2012
Size: ~2 inches
Biggest beetle I've seen in real life. Larger than all the cockroaches I've seen here in south Florida (and that's saying something!). Ergates species?

thinking Derobrachus (brevicollis?)

Spiny thorax
Wow, I'm lame, and getting blind in my old age. I didn't notice the spiny thorax at all until you brought up this genus. Thanks, Blaine!

Derobrachus thomasi
D. brevicollis only occurs in the far northern part of the state.

thomasi was my first thought
the pronotum didnt look hairy enough based on the info page...:)

Thanks, Michael!
Derobrachus thomasi, then. Similar pest status to D. brevicollis? This one was in a natural area with no agriculture or sod/turfgrass nearby.

I don't think
anything is known about the biology of D. thomasi specifically, but it's fairly safe to assume that it's similar to D. brevicollis. By the way, I've been to Yamato Scrub and it is a very nice habitat.
