Seed Beetle? - Badister neopulchellus

Seed Beetle? - Badister neopulchellus
Chicago, Illinois, USA
July 4, 2006
Size: 7mm body
I think this is a flower or bark beetle but I couldn't find a match in the guide. I know the wide pronotum should be a clue to me but I can't place it.

Badister neopulchellus vs Badister pulchellus
This specimen from Illinois is probably the common Transamerican-canadian Badister neopulchellus rather than the very similar B. pulchellus which is quite rare and mostly limited to the area around IL, IN, TN. Among the several subtle differences between these species, B. neopulchellus has darkened antennae and usually darkened scutellum as suggested by the image; antennae and scutellum are much paler in B. pulchellus. This specimen has bodly length > 6 mm; B. pulchellus is reported to be < 5.3 mm. Most "B. pulchellus" in insect collections are really B. neopulchellus!

Thanks for the correction,
good to have a Carabid specialist working BugGuide! This family certainly is in great need.

Carabidae.
Right family, but wrong genus. Don't know exactly where this one belongs.
