Aphids on Spruce - Pterocomma bicolor???

Aphids on Spruce - Pterocomma bicolor???
Harlemville, Columbia County, New York, USA
May 11, 2012
Size: ca. 2-3mm
These aphids were swarming around the base and up into the branches of a spruce. Where the trunk met the ground, Camponotus ants were huddled and seemed somewhat beleagured, twitching away as the aphids walked over them. Pterocomma bicolor seemed the easy ID given the color, but, from what I've read, those don't feed on Spruce. Any ID thoughts? Any understanding of why this sudden swarm? Thank you.

No on Pterocomma.
That genus' hosts are poplar and willow. Plus they have swollen but short siphunculi, which I'm not seeing here. The giant aphids in lachninae use spruce as a host. Especially the genus Cinara
