There were several of these wasps flying around and going in and out of a hole (the edge of which can be seen on the right side of this photo) in a sandy, gravelly path through coastal sage scrub at the Claremont Colleges' Robert J. Bernard Biological Field Station. I wondered if they could be Ammophila?
