Poblicia fulginosa

I couldn't quite believe the id because I've never seen the adults there, and the nymphs were common. Lois O'Brien says: "It is definitely not Itzalana submaculata. Our only US record for it is Sabal Palm Grove, Brownsville TX on Baccharis. I haven't collected the adults, but did get nymphs when we went there, on everything. Their vertex as a 5th instar nymph is at least 8 times wider than long. Steve and I published on it-he is a good illustrator.

So with the short head that leaves Alphina glauca and Poblicia fuliginosa. I reared P.f. from eggs laid after feeding adults on Baccharis from Madera Canyon. We have also found adults on Brickellia. At first I couldn't match the lateral view-the head wasn't indented in my 2-4 instars---and then I read the size. It does match the first instar perfectly.

I have some 4th or fifth Alphina nymphs beaten from who knows what--they are longer in proportion to width and don't have all that white color on them"
