This bee landed near then went into an Anthophora pacifica burrow at the Claremont Colleges’ Robert J. Bernard Field Station. I wondered if it might be the same Melecta sp. that we saw at the same location in 2010 and 2011:



This year’s photos are all rather blurry, but I hope that amongst them there’s enough information to confirm genus.

I’m curious to see how the A. pacificaMelecta dynamic will play out in the long run. This is fairly large A. pacifica colony – a visiting researcher counted 237 burrows this year – but the cuckoo bees have clearly discovered them.
