Burying Beetle - Nicrophorus carolina

Burying Beetle - Nicrophorus carolina
Lakeland, Polk County, Florida, USA
July 15, 2006
Size: 24 mm
This beetle is N. carolinus. It was found on a raccoon which had been dead a couple of days. Here in Florida, these beetles must compete with the fire ants so they aren't as numerous as in the North. Please see these links: http://www.unk.edu/acad/biology/hoback/carrion_beetles/Nicrophorus1.htm

Scott, I am working on a field guide to the beetles
of Arizona (self published, co author Art Evans) This species occurs in AZ, but I have not been able to find one. Would you allow me to use your photo? Best regards, Margarethe Brummermann
