Smoky-winged dancer (Argia fumipennis fumipennis) - Argia fumipennis - female

Smoky-winged dancer (Argia fumipennis fumipennis) - Argia fumipennis - Female
Roswell, Fulton County, Georgia, USA
May 15, 2012
I wish it had perched on something more natural than my soaker hose. Sigh.

Communicated with Dr Abbott of Odonata Central
and he said they decided not to use subspecies there. While there are three clearly different geographic forms of the Variable Dancer, Argia fumipennis, they do interbreed where the ranges meet and intergrades exist, so they blend imperceptibly from the Violet Dancers of the north through the Smoky Dancers down to the Black Dancers of Florida. We separate them into subspecies here at BugGuide, but that shouldn't be taken to be scientific exactitude! :)

Dr Abbott's reply
Hmm. Right after I saw that you moved my photo to Smoky-winged, I wrote to Giff Beaton, who, having ID'd it for me in the first place, confirmed that it is a named subspecies of Variable and said "all is okay," so I figured that that confirmation was scientifically exact enough to change all my names of the insect on my hard drive, so I did. I'm gonna leave it at that, knowing and appreciating your additional information. Thank you.

And, btw, I love the names of all of them.

Moved
Moved from Variable Dancer.

Variable to Smoky-winged
Thanks for narrowing it down to the subspecies. Much appreciated. Now I'm off to change all the names of it on my hard drive.
