Are you sure these are the same specimen. The white on the hind tibia looks more extensive in the second image.

Same specimen

Bill, I checked my original files, and this is appears to be the same specimen, consecutive images. Apparently, I followed it from the sheet to the UV light fixture. It's just the angle of the hind tibia.

Chalcosyrphus subg. Xylotomim

Chalcosyrphus subg. Xylotomima or Xylota subg. Xylota. The two are very similar, and I personally can't tell them apart; my key notes that you can't really tell them apart in the field without looking at the metasternum, though someone who's an expert in this group could likely tell you.

(I'm saying Xylota subg. Xylota instead of X. flukei because the markings on the second tergite on the abdomen seem to not reach the front edge of the tergite)

That does let me confirm that

That does let me confirm that the markings don't reach the anterior edge of the second tergite, so subgenus Xylota is correct if this is Xylota.

On my Syrphidae to-do list is to go back with the key at some point and look at these Xylotina flies, but they're tricky ones! Sorry I can't be of more help on this lovely fly - they're wonderful images!
