Emergence of bees/wasps from dunes on Point Reyes CA - Bembix

Emergence of bees/wasps from dunes on Point Reyes CA - Bembix
Abbott's Lagoon, Point Reyes National SeaShore, Marin County, California, USA
May 20, 2012
Size: 1 inch
There were hundreds if not thousands of these bees emerging from the dunes at Abbott's Lagoon. The first photo shows one of many little tunnels in the sand from emerging bees. Interestingly, there were discarded 'shells' from newly emerged bees everywhere on the surface (exposed by wind and shifting dunes?) I found one that was still intact and opened it to reveal a dead developing bee.
