These do appear to be Prodiplosis violicola galls, but the midges you reared may be inquilines or predators. I don't know enough to say based on their appearance, but larvae of this species are supposed to drop to the ground to pupate (see guide page).

 
First is probably not Prodiplosis
The first photo appears to have 14 flagellomeres, ruling out Cecidomyiidi (other than Planetella, which it is not).
