.
"Small white" is the name of this species in Europe, where it is native. This differentiates it from the larger "large white" (Pieris brassicae), also native to the Old World. The "small white" is now an introduced pest here in the U.S., where it is just called "cabbage white". In Europe, "cabbage white" could refer to either of these two species. :)
