Large Brown Beetle burrowing into loose soil all over my garden in Connecticut - Identification??

I have a large brown beetle 1/2" - 5/8" that flies clumsily all over my garden and burrows into any loose soil it can find. I just tilled landscaping beds in front of my house and I saw them there as well. No interest is shown in plants, just digging burrows. I assume they are laying eggs, but what kind of beetle is it and why so many this year? I first noticed them in early May. Thanks.

From the description, it sounds a lot like a bumble flower beetle. They do the same thing in my garden. But I`m no expert! :)

Numbers
I can't help with an ID, but the numbers you are seeing are likely due, in part, to an unusually mild winter. Some animals also have a population boom/bust cycle which takes place over a period of years.

You'll improve your chances for an ID...
...if you take a photo (even a bad one) and post it to ID Request.
