Braconid? - Gasteruption - female

Braconid? - Gasteruption - Female
Reading, Hillsdale County, Michigan, USA
May 28, 2012
Size: approx. 1/2 inch
Caught around 11 A.M. hovering around some blocks of oak and maple. Lots of old wood was present. Wings would get a reddish cast in the sun, but I couldn't get a good picture of this.

Narrowing species possibilities
From the relatively short ovipositor (i.e half the wing length or less) this can be narrowed down to one of G. assectator, G. kirbii, or G. amputatum. The last of those can be eliminated since it has a white tip on the ovipositor and its range is southern Arizona into Mexico. If you can carefully measure the length-to-width ratios of the 2nd hind tarsus and the 4th antennal segment...and can consistently correlate that with the sheen (shining or matte) of the head...you may be able to get to species (for details, see here).

one of the short-ovipositor spp.
