Catocaline moth - Acronicta

Catocaline moth - Acronicta
Whiterock Conservancy, Guthrie County, Iowa, USA
May 27, 2012
Size: 27 mm
I can't make this fit anything in the new Peterson moth guide or any species of Catocala at bugguide. Note the grayish fringe and the brown band (hard to see) on the hindwing. The Catocala spp. with dark hindwings all seem to have a sharp "jag" in the PM line that is not present here. AM line in the photo is doubled. Few other distinct lines or marks are apparent.

looks like one
of the dagger moths to me..but what do i know?

Good Call: Acronicta
You might know more than you let on. Given the markings and the location, as well as my overestimate of size (notice the width of the mortar joints in the bricks), I'm inclined toward the Small Oak Dagger, Acronicta increta. The lack of anal dash in the forewings is one clue.
