Hyper Jumper - Maevia inclemens - male

Hyper Jumper - Maevia inclemens - Male
Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
May 30, 2012
I actually found this the other night when I reached for my capture cup and found this guy already in it! The cup lives on top of my refrigerator, which is by the door, and I know *I* didn't put him in there. I noticed fairly quickly there was something odd about this spider, so I transferred it to a holding cup, where it's been for two days while I've waited for it to settle down.

Man is he hyper! Jumping spiders are usually, you know, jumpy, but this one scoots so quickly! He almost ended up right in my lap when I removed the cup that was over him on a piece of paper once last night, hoping to take a shot. I put him right back in his cup and put him away till later.

Tonight I got a few shots of him, though he doesn't want to sit still out on paper, so I had to get him inside him cup, quickly.

He's of a skinnier, quicker make-up than I'm used to seeing with jumping spiders. At first I thought he might be a lynx spider, but the eyes say jumper. I really like the markings on the inside of his front two pairs of legs.

Looks like
a male Dimorphic Jumper (Maevia inclemens). This is the light phase version of the males. The dark phase has a dark body and pale yellow legs. I would agree with the level of hyperactivity; they are hard to catch in the hand. Nice pics!

Oh, yes it does -
down to those inner markings on the front legs! Thank you.
