Idioglossa miraculosa larval damage - Idioglossa miraculosa
3 miles east of Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, USA
May 20, 2012
Size: Leaf length, 180mm
This image shows the larval damage and pupal chamber of Batrachedridae: Idioglossa miraculosa; the larval host plant is deer-tongue grass, Dicanthelium (formerly Panicum) clandestinum (Poaceae). Top panel, underside of host leaf, overview. Bottom left panel: closeup of underside of host leaf, showing characteristic patch of skeletonization on either side of the leaf midvein. In the center, the web under which the larva fed has been cut near the edges by the larva, and the silk of the web has been rolled into the central tube seen here, inside which the larva pupates. Bottom right panel: upperside of host leaf, showing the hole (at arrow) that was cut through the leaf by the larva, and the attached silken tube, which the larva uses as an escape shelter if disturbed.
