gallery etched in wood under bark of Balsam Fir

gallery etched in wood under bark of Balsam Fir
Bluffton Fir Stand State Preserve, Bluffton, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
June 1, 2012
Size: ~2-3 mm wide
I found these complex gallery etchings on the wood beneath the sloughing bark of a fallen, decomposing bole of Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea) mixed within a maple forest on a steep, rocky slope. My finger is pointing toward the top of the tree.

Although the resolution isn't great, I can make out some alternating egg niches indicating Scolytinae.

Moved from ID Request. Beetle galleries. I don't know what family, maybe buprestidae or scolytinae.
