Early butterfly instar? - Spodoptera ornithogalli

Early butterfly instar? - Spodoptera ornithogalli
Duncanville, Dallas County, Texas, USA
June 1, 2012
Size: 1.25"
Found eating a green tomato on the vine.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Are you raising it?
They are quite interesting. This young instar has eyespots at one end and later instar has them at the opposite end instead. It's a generalist, so will eat a great many things. Click on the photo for some early instars with photos of the later instars:

Cutworm
I think you're right - the adult certainly looks familiar, and I've seen other smaller cutworms around too. I placed it away from my tomatoes, will try to find it again.

Looks like
Yellow-striped Armyworm caterpillar.
