what is it? - Endeodes collaris

i'm not sure if this is an adult. Those could be undeveloped wings. This was observed on the rocks near some tide pools by the ocean in Santa Cruz. it moved very rapidly across the rocks, disappearing into crevasses for a few seconds only to emerge and continue its rapid pace across the rocks. what could it be?

i see these have been cropping up about 20 miles to the north at san gregorio, and pescadero beaches. it would seem that this is a beach loving species of beetle!

An afterthought. Soft-winged flower beetle?

I guess soft-winged flower beetles is just a common name that also includes vestigial winged beetles? Or does it have functional wings?

i still don't know if this is an adult. All photos here show roughly the same morphology. i guess that doesn't make it an adult, though.

adult, of course (elytra reduced, hind wings atrophied)

larva would look something like

can't comment on the common name, though: common names are not used in taxonomic literature anyway
