Dark form snout larva
Alan, Great photo! I believe this is a dark form of the American Snout. See John Abbot's watercolor for a more tyical caterpillar.

PS: Amazingly, yours, Abbot's and Jim Brock's appear to be the only larval images on the 'net of this most common butterfly...

PPS: John and Gloria Tveten report "enormous variation in color of these larvae."
