Red Admiral chrysalis - Vanessa atalanta

Red Admiral chrysalis - Vanessa atalanta
rome, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, USA
June 9, 2012
Found on gill weed, nettle growing nearby

looks like a correct identification
I doubt the caterpillar was actually feeding on the Gill Weed, but rather just decided it was a good place to pupate. Host plants should be in the Urticaceae or perhaps Cannabaceae.

Moved from Butterflies (excluding skippers).

Thanks David!
Yes, there was nettle growing close by.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Looks exactly
like the chrysalis in the container where the summer day-campers were rearing a red admiral caterpillar. Now we're counting days until it ecloses.

Actually...
It is a chrysalis.
