These lovely little flies are surprisingly wary and easily startled.

quadrifasciata group
This is
Ptychoptera quadrifasciata
in the traditional sense, but the Great Plains population is believed to be an undescribed species. Gregory Courtney and his student Andrew Fasbender proposed a name for it which is unavailable because it appeared in an unpublished thesis.
