Size: Abt the size of a Monarch
It was very windy. These butterflies would not land so I just pointed my camera in their direction and took a bunch of shots. This was the best I got. The underside of a different individual can be seen here:

Beautiful
Regal Fritillaries (Speyeria idalia). Nice find -- I've only seen them a few times myself!

That was my thought as well, but I didn't dare to hope that I'd actually seen them. I have been hoping to see one for over 20 years. Today, I think I saw maybe a dozen or so.
