Possibly a Spider Wasp? - Palmodes praestans

Possibly a Spider Wasp? - Palmodes praestans
Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, USA
June 1, 2012
Size: 30mm
Seems to be a spider wasp, but he seemed to be constantly searching for something in the lawn. It was a hot day, perhaps he was trying to find water? Thank you for any help to ID him/her.
