Tick - Amblyomma

Tick - Amblyomma
Trenton, Jackson County, Alabama, USA
June 9, 2012
Size: 0.2-0.3 mm
Is this a deer tick?

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

this is not Ixodes, no...
the tick has festoons, which rules-out Ixodes ('deer ticks'). May be an Amblyomma, let me snoop around a bit more.'
We have other tick specialists on BG that may know off-hand what it is.

Amblyomma
This appears to be an Amblyomma, based on the presence of festoons and eyes, length of mouthparts, and shape of basis capituli.

It lacks the typical white macula seen with A. americanum which leads me to think this is a nymph.

My diagnosis is Amblyomma americanum, nymph. But best get a confirmation from another tick specialist.

Thanks for the identification
Thanks for the identification. I think your diagnosis is correct. This tick got the free ride home from a field trip to Alabama. We are apparently not prepared. I checkout the Georgia department health website. A. americanum is the most common tick in Georgia. Not surprise to got it from the neighbor.
