Holocephala sp.? - Dioctria hyalipennis

Holocephala sp.? - Dioctria hyalipennis
Fletcher Wildlife Garden, Ottawa-Carleton, Ontario, Canada
June 13, 2012
Size: Very small, about 5 mm
There were quite a few of these tiny flies along a woodland edge, perching low to the ground on vegetation. Initially I thought they were a Holocephala sp. but would appreciate input from those much more knowledgeable.

Moved from Robber Flies.

Dioctria
Not Holcocephala, but Dioctria; I'd say D. hyalipennis. Holcocephala are tiny, stubby and have uniquely shaped heads.

(By the way, powers that be, why are we maintaining separate pages for D. baumhaueri and D. hyalipennis? Did I miss a paper reversing Lehr's synonymy?)

thats a good question
I'll move them over and make a note of the synonymy on the info page.
