Nycteola sp?

I now(5 sept 2012) think this is N metaspilella based on the weak post med line and dark wedge as center of wing.

I've replaced the original picture with one (better brightness etc.) that shows these features better.

Moths that look like this are distributed in all the Nyctola species.

As N frigidana

As N cinereana

..and these guys all LOOK more like each other than they do the species they're housed with.

So I've temporarily resolved by quandary by just going with the description from Beadle & Leckie.

Thanks for the new photo
The dark wedge can be present on other species. I have not read the original description, but the weak postmedial line does appear to be a key point. This moth does match the specimen determined by DNA from Mark Dreiling.
Thanks

Thanks!
as always. It was Mark's photo that started me thinking.

If it is okay with you I'll leave the photo where it is. Figure there's enough doubt expressed in this thread that no one will be mis-lead by its placement.

Otherwise, let me know and I'll put it back to the genus level.

Can't tell you how much I value your guidance!

species level is good!
You're welcome! I appreciate the kind words but they are not necessary. Just keep those nice moths coming!

probably Nycteola frigidana - Hodges #8975
N. cinereana is supposed to have dark shading right at the forewing base.
